NHAI Increases Toll Rates by 5% Across Highways
Annual Revision
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has decided to raise tolls across the country’s highways by an average of 5%. This adjustment is part of the NHAI’s annual exercise to revise toll rates in accordance with changes in the wholesale price index (CPI)-based inflation.
Implementation Date
The new toll rates will come into effect from June 3, 2024. Initially scheduled for April 1, the revision was postponed due to the Lok Sabha elections.
Reasoning
The NHAI annually reviews toll rates to align them with inflation. This adjustment aims to ensure that the toll rates reflect changes in the cost of living.
User Fee Plazas
There are approximately 855 user fee plazas on the national highway network, where tolls are collected according to the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008. Among these, around 675 are publicly funded, while 180 are operated by concessionaires.
